Holocaust Memorial Day 2020
On Monday I headed back to the Holocaust exhibition and learning centre in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. It was the Holocaust Memorial Day and they had asked me to photograph their memorial event. This was a bit of a change for me as usual, I'm photographing the survivors, this time I was there to capture the whole event. I arrived early and as soon as I got there I saw loads of stuff going on so it there was no time to faff about I just had to get in there and start shooting. Survivor Iby Knill was being interviewed Live on BBC Radio Leeds, then she was whisked off to be interviewed for the TV and these are the bits I wanted to capture. At the same time, the Mayor was being escorted around the exhibition which I needed to capture so when it's something like this I'm just whizzing around like a crazy person. I also had to capture pictures of people mingling, the setup and pretty much everything else.
The actual memorial was something a little different for me as usually, I'm looking for people laughing and smiling. However, when it's something like this I'm looking for people who had deep concentrating faces, people who were quite emotional. There was a variety of speakers and performers and it was a great evening. The highlight was when Iby Knill presented and told some of her story which is just incredible.
If you ever want to go somewhere which is really interesting then head over to the Holocaust and Learning Centre in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
