Crossfit Defiance, fitness photography, Brighouse, West Yorkshire
From the archives, being in lockdown has sent me to looking at lots of my old photos (I'm actually putting everything into new online storage so have a million or so pictures to move. Here's a shoot from December 2013. So, at the time I was living in Brighouse, West Yorkshire. I had heard about Crossfit and Google led me to Crossfit Defiance. At first, I headed down there to see if I could take a few photos, but then I thought it looked like a brilliant concept so actually joined and started training (which I loved). After I got to know people I asked if I could do a shoot which they said yes to. 2013 was a time when I just wanted to get my flashes out and make interesting pictures. It's great looking back at my archives as I can see how I've progressed and now I would do this shoot completely different. If I was to do this now I would just get in really close, not flash, natural light and concentrate on the expression and emotions rather than worry about setting up loads of flashes.
Now I look at these pictures and I know that I made a lot of mistakes but that's how you learn. I get annoyed by the highlight in the background, the shadows and the clutter on the left-hand-side but after beating myself up these aren't terrible pictures. I'd absolutely LOVE to shoot more Crossfit as I know I could make really interesting pictures now.
